About GICA

Established in 1965, GICA is a public instutution gathering the Tunisian industries involved in fruit, vegetable and fish processing sectors, under the authority of the Ministry of Industry and trade.

GICA is managed by a board of directors representing the public administration, the national organization of growers and the national organization of processors and exporters.

General overview

The processing of fruits, vegetables and bluefish to produce canned products, represents one of the most important and oldest branches of Tunisian food industry, given the important role it plays in the enhancement of national agriculture production, but also through its support to ensure the country's food security.

At present, the canned food sector includes more than one hundred of processing plants, representing roughly 10% of the total number of food-industries plants in Tunisia. Established near the agricultural fields, the plants process nearly one million tons of fresh crop products and bleufish to produce more than 200 million tons of finished products.

In term of jobs, the branch employs 11.000 person. However, the activity of the branch is marked by a dominant seasonal aspect and, therefore, by a very high number of part-time jobs.

Currently, the canned food sector offers a large range of products,made of typical, authentic and diversified receipts. 
















Thanks to the joint efforts of the authorities and the private sector, the Tunisian canned food industry knew a constant growth in particular as from the Eighties. This activity began since nearly 2 centries ago. From some thousand tons, the volume of finished products reached more than 200 thousand tons nowadays, which has given the country a potential exporter status of a wide range of canned and semi-preserved food towards more than 40 countries across the 5 continents.

Several comanies have set up Quality Management systems and are certified ISO and/or HACCP. Thanks to the encouraging policy of the Governement as regards to the modernization of the industry, the number of certified processing plants is in constant development.

The canned food sector contributes, actively to the develoment of Tunisian exports and offers a large range of products such as the Tunisian well-known hot sauce: Harissa, tomato paste , canned sardine, and other typical and new bottled products that have an increasingly success on the external markets: traditional salad, harissa sauce, grilled salad "Mechouia", chakchouka... 

The export covers about 20% of the production, for a value of almost 90 million dinars.
