About GICA

Established in 1965, GICA is a public instutution gathering the Tunisian industries involved in fruit, vegetable and fish processing sectors, under the authority of the Ministry of Industry and trade.

GICA is managed by a board of directors representing the public administration, the national organization of growers and the national organization of processors and exporters.

The tomato processing activity in Tunisia dates back to the beginning of the last century. It knewn a significant growth, and nowadays there are 29 factories with total daily processing capacity of 36.000 tons of fresh tomatoes.

Most tomato plants have begun modernizing and increasing the capacity of their production facilities, and introduced quality management systems. 

The tomato farming engages more than 10.000 growers on 15.000 to 25.000 hectares of cultivated lands each season.

Almost 650.000 to 950.000 tons of fresh tomatoes are processed yearly to product of  tomato paste and other canned tomatoes.

The processing activity starts by the half of July until September.

For several years the sector is ..., and exports account for nearly 20% of the production. European union markets, Maghreb and African countries stand for the main destinations of this Tunisian product.

 Canned Harissa

Made from concentrated red fresh hot pimentos, garlic and spices, and free from any chemical additives, the Tunisian canned harissa is considered among the most appreciated products of the Tunisian gastronomy. Tasted and valued by millions of tourists, this product is becoming popular in the international markets. 

The cultivation of pepper covers more than 15.000 acres for the production of nearly 300.000 tons of fresh pepper of which 25-30% goes to 26 units representing the processing sector.
During recent years, the exporters have witnessed an upswing reflected by the volume and the number of importing countries.

 Other canned and semi-preserved fruits and vegetables

The Tunisian canning sector includes other original bottled products that join the delights of the Tunisian typical receipts to the konw-how of the professionals.

A wide range of products is thus processed by this sector, including grilled salad "Slata Mechouia", eggplant paste "Caponata", grilled artichokes, mixed cooked vegetables in sauce "Chakchouka", tradional harissa, garlic paste, olive paste, not to mention the ususal range  including diffrent types of table olives, capers and peppers...

30 units are producing yearly almost 10.000 tons of olives and canned and semi-preserved vegetables in diffrent packages and presentations...

As regards to frit processing industry, it's carried out by twelve plants that process various fresh fruits such as: apricot, quice, strawberry, fig, apple... The processing activity is seasonal and involves fresh fruits.
